Turbot fish
A four-candidate strong-weak-strong chain. Skyscrapers and kites are recognizable arrangements of this same argument.
How to spot it
Locate two strong links connected by a mutual exclusion.
The common mistake
Despite its name, this is a chain argument, not the ordinary base-and-cover fish count.
Learn this first

A worked example
This position comes from SudokuByte’s lesson on the Turbot fish. Gold cells hold the evidence; green cells are the pattern’s ends.

Where to look
Locate two strong links connected by a mutual exclusion.A four-candidate strong-weak-strong chain. Skyscrapers and kites are recognizable arrangements of this same argument.
Read the evidence in this position
Trace r7c27 → r7c17 → r2c17 → r3c17. Solid links mean at least one end is true; dashed links mean the two ends cannot both be true. Why the deduction must follow
Assume the first candidate is false. The next is forced true, the next false, and so on, ending true. If the first candidate was true instead, it already supplies the required 7. At least one endpoint is 7; a target seeing both endpoints cannot be 7.Apply the result
Erase 7 from r8c1. The pattern may remove candidates without immediately solving a cell.
